Jahsun

Founder, Artistic & Musical director, Organizer, Drums

A self-taught drummer with 20 years of experience, Jahsun is one of the most sought after drummers in the reggae-afro-soul-funk-hiphop genres. He is renowned for crossing musical boundaries and implementing his finely tuned skills in live improvisation. Jahsun has played with most internationally renowned reggae artists and toured across Canada, the United States and the Carribbean. In addition to being a critical element of several Montreal-based groups, such as OneSun, Ark of Infinity, Black Soil, Inword and The EQ, his influential sound and imaginative beats provide a foundation for creative expression in all forms.

Amen

Raised in a shack in the woods by a blues man and a gypsy. . . . From a young age, Amen was heavily influenced by blues, jazz, rock, punk and rap music and began writing poetry. Amen is now based in NYC and is a razor-sharp movement lyricist and hip-hop rock artist.


 

 


Anastasia Culurides

Bass
Anastasia has been playing bass years for 4 years. In this time she has recorded two full length albums, one EP and continues to work on varying recording projects. Her full time band is called Creature, in which she participates in composiing and arranging. The Montreal Gazette called them, band to watch for in 2007. They are being shopped by a well respected lawyer in the industry and expect a record deal by the end of the year. Anastasia personal pursuits are the study of jazz improvisation. The first sessions of Kalmunity were held in her loft, which is where the inspiration to play was cultivated and nurtured.

After migrating to Montreal in 2000, he has steadily worked the city's circuit and formed Fredy V & Black Soil. Whether it's on bass, guitar or vocals, Fredy has established himself as a dynamic performer.

Jason "Blackbird" Selman

Poet, Trumpet

A graduate of Concordia University with a BFA (specialization in Jazz Studies), Jason Selman has been performing on the Montreal Arts scene as both Performance Poet and Musician for the last 10 years. In addition using these talents in the service of Montreal’s Black Theatre Workshop “Youth Works” youth theatre program and releasing his first self-published collection of poems, Psychological, in 2003, he is currently working on a collection of jazz poems entitled The Freedom I Stole. In May 2005 he began producing Intimate Sky , a poetry, music and song series and a branch of Kalmunity.

 

 

 

 

Joel "Jahnice" Janis

Haïti, mars 1983, Jah Nice, né Joël Janis, voit le jour dans un petit village appelé Laval. Se retrouvant orphelin peu après sa naissance il est adopté par une famille québecoise. C' est donc à Shawinigan, en Mauricie, qu' il fait ses premiers pas dans le monde artistique. Il s'essaie dabord au dessin, a la poésie et tout naturellement  au chant.  Voulant tenter sa chance dans la grande métropole, il s'intalle à Montréal en 2003. Tout en évoluant au sein du KalmUnity Vibe Collective il se consacre à sa carrière solo. Jah Nice est un enfant de village. Il exprime cette dualité, du Québec à Haïti, du village à la ville. Il nous ramène à ce soul, cette foi en la vie, cette énergie communicative.

 

 

 

 


Jon Ascencio

Jon Asencio is a 25 year veteran of the Montreal music scene. His sonic evolution has crossed numerous genres, from hardcore punk, pop, reggae and jazz to experimental and electronic music. His performing/ recording credits include The Doughboys, Pest 5000, Starbean,Electronic Humans Guild, Moondata, Kalmunity, Ark Of Infinity, GOA! and Fly Pan Am.

Lady Katalyst is spoken-singsong-rap-flowiscist and a multidisciplinary artist with a varied background in dance, sound, journalism and radio. She is a root member of the Kalmunity Vibe Collective and is also often a featured artist throughout Montreal's spoken word scene.

kaie kellough is a writer, performer, and organizer who has worked with the kvc since it was founded. kaie has performed and published across canada and in the states. he is the author of lettricity (poetry, cumulus press, 2004) and the co-editor of talking book (anthology, cumulus press, 2007). kaie is currently working on a second book of poetry.

 

 


Kya Kindu

Kya Kindu means Love & Dangerous Healing, which is what this female reggae chanter brings to the table. Her strong & enchanting voice will electrify as well as soothe your mind, leaving you singing her hooks for a very long time.

Meena Murugesan

If you're lucky, she just might pull out her violin for a sweet hip hop track! Meena is an interdisciplinary artist dedicating to bridging sacred spaces. She has been fortunate to collaborate with remarkable artists, storytellers, dancers, musicians and activists in Canada, the United States, India, West Africa, Chile and Brazil. She is currently working on a documentary film entitled Butterfly Songs, and phase II of a one-woman contemporary Indian dance/theatre piece entitled Unravelled.

After working with Cirque du Soleil’s La Nouba in Orlando, Florida, she returned to Montreal and has begun to establish her roots as a “Spoken Songtress”.
