| The Kalmunity Vibes Collective Cultural Exchange
The Centre for Art Tapes in Halifax, will present a series of cultural events with the Kalmunity Vibes Collective of Montréal. “Kalmunity” is composed of spoken word and musical performance artists who work with a style derived from African roots, and black musical genres. The Kalmunity Vibes Collective is not a band; it’s a happening. It’s unpredictable, on the spot, and their “live organic improv” is unique in the spoken word or music scene.
At each performance “Kalmunity” gets down to the business of creating an organic music/word mix, sharing the microphone with a full crowd who sway, clap and vocalize to the rhythm and rhyme. The crowd grooves to Kalmunity’s improvised melting pot of reggae, soul, jazz, and spoken word, backed up by hints of scat, beat box, and rap and whatever funky sounds the evening’s performers put out. At their regular Tuesday night gigs in a coffee shop in Montreal, the Kalmunity Vibes Collective is represented by around ten of the roughly 60 musicians and poets in the collective. While no two nights are the same, it’s the “vibes” that are consistent – collective, community, sharing, and respect in an amazingly cohesive groove.
